Why have backlinks and what are they?

Backlinks are hypertext (i.e. blue line) links that point to a particular page on your website from another website. These are seen by Google as a vote from the originating site indicating that the destination it is pointing to has some value. Whatever text the link has also tells Google what that page may be about. So if you have ten links pointing at your page that say some variation of “dog training” then your page may appear in the search listings for dog training. Other factors apply here too so don’t get too wrapped up in this explaination, it’s just cursory.

Google loves to use backlinks as a voting mechanism. The more links that say dog training from various sources the more likely it is to rise in the search results page for that search term. As long as the links are of decent value (not from spammy sites) Google will count them, raising your ranking and therefore increasing your amount of visitors to your site.

How do you build links?

The hard way to do it is to ask. You look for other websites that are somewhat related to your topic (not neccessarily compittion mind you) and attempt to contact the webmaster for the site. You offer the webmaster something useful on your site that they might can use such as great content that thier readers might could use or perhaps an application or program that is available. Alternately you can have an article written to give that somehow relates your website’s topic with the other webmaster’s topic and include links back to your site.

The up side to this is that you can come back with some high quality links which are very beneficial. The down side is that it is a huge amount of work involved. Between contacting webmasters that may ignore you to following up ensuring link placement to making sure that the content is relevant and interesting… it can be a daunding task.

Is there an easier way?

There are two ways that can make the effort easier. First is using a service that does it for you. This would be like you hiring someone else to find and create the links for you. This usually can be quite pricey and you have little control over where your links go.

Second is using a software sevice that automates the task for you. There are many versions of software out there that can provide this task, however none of them are equal. There are at least four traits that you need to look for in order to get your money’s worth.

Multiple IP addresses

Google loves variety. The more spread out across the internet the better.

One way links

Even the resembalcne of reciprical linking may hurt the linking power. Make sure that there are no required links back from your site.

Slow growth

Google loves to penalize for unusual activity. Make sure that the addition of links to your site are a few at a time so that it appears more natural

Customized links

Make sure that you can put your keywords in the links to your site. There is little use of backlinking if you can’t tell Google what your page is about through the link pointing back at you.

Building backlinks can be an arduous process. The most common free methods are directory submissions, article submissions, comment posting and social bookmarking.

However, articles take time to write, and writers block can be hard to shake off. Directory submissions are hard to get approved for new Page Rank Zero sites. Comment posting can be a good option. And Social Bookmarking doesnt always increase traffic unless many users bookmark it.

Fortunately, there are some easier ways to get links, and I shall be listing them in a short series of articles.

For this first article, I shall describe using public information about your site to gain backlinks.

Domain information tools such as whois.net, Alexa and domaintools.com maintain information about virtually every domain. As a result, every domain will have a backlink from these sites. However, the search engines wont know about all these pages unless theyre informed of them. Therefore, webmasters whove registered new domains can gain some free backlinks by merely pointing links at these pages. These links can be hosted on blogs, forums or any other sites that is already indexed.

As an example, I have recently registered the domain dawjee.com, and would like to add some backlinks to it. In order to get them from whois.net, Alexa and domaintools.com, I need to place the following links on indexed pages (e.g. my blog):

http://www.whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=dawjee&tld=com

http://whois.domaintools.com/dawjee.com

http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?url=dawjee.com

http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr…ils/dawjee.com

In order to get the search engines to index pages for other domains, simply replace dawjee.com in the links above.

3. Send “tweets” to your followers relating to information posted in your blog. Don’t constantly send them links. Rarely send links. Sales links sent constantly will drive your followers away.

I want to emphasize the importance of these three steps. There is no sense in making your efforts in Twitter overly difficult and frustrating like other so called targeted traffic resources. Your blog, domain name and twitter name are the first step and most critical.

Using the “misguided,” non-niche related names and domains will make everything difficult to remember for your followers. So, don’t ignore this first step. If you have to, start over with a new domain, blod name, and twitter name.

Step 3 is just as vital. I can quite literally guarantee you will loose followers as fast as you make them if you send flurries of sales links. This is a social network. You must be social. Your followers will accept and check your links as long as you have something to say besides “buy this, buy that, buy from me.”

Well, we don’t want to be sold anything. If I want to buy something then I’ll go looking for it.

I spend a lot of time searching the internet for information. Am I looking for sales pages? No, not unless I want something and then I go searching.

The results I tend to click on and read are information.

Fortunately, the top results for most queries seem to be article websites. These are ones showing relevant articles based on my web search.

What’s the lesson to be learned here?

Basically this. If we all mainly look for information before we look for sales pages then this is the way to get buyers. How is this?

When we make a decision to look for something to buy it’s usually because we’ve heard about something that interests us.

My friend Tony met me in the bar 2 weeks ago. He knew that I was still using dial-up internet. Not broadband. I wanted it already but wasn’t sure, for quite some time, which one to go for.

Tony told me how he’d recently changed his broadband supplier. He said how brilliant it was, what it did and the price deal. I was very interested.

So next I started looking for the person selling this deal. After which, I shortly signed up. I’m very happy with my decision.

The point I’m making is…

I wasn’t looking for this man to sell me broadband. However, after hearing information about it I decided to go off and look. What are these two steps?

Quite simply, (#1), I got information about something and then, (#2), went looking where I could buy it. What does this mean?

I don’t mean you just write articles recommending products. But if your article points out advantages or pitfalls and how a particular purchase helps…then this works. Or…

It could be an article about how to do something or the solution to a problem. After, you mention that a perfect tool (product) helps them carry out your advice. There’s a problem?

The way most people write articles, titles and link to their website is not right. Often, the readers and website traffic could be far higher if the article titles, text and website link were written differently.

I’ve seen this problem with most of the articles out there. Think about it.

Why do just a fraction of articles become popular?

They do something different…that’s why. I’ve found out (quite by accident) the best way of doing this.

Just look at the most popular articles section on article directories. You’ll be amazed at how many readers each article gets. And this is just on one site.

How about in the off-line world. Look at how many people have their heads stuck in newspapers and magazines. Lets face it, nearly everyone loves an article. And what about if they see the link to your website at the end. What happens to your website traffic.

When I look at one of my articles I posted in a test the method I use got me a huge amount of readers on website visits. (I explain this method in my latest guide.)

Nearly all marketers know how effective article marketing is on getting website visitors. Just check out the amount of people on the web shouting about how successful this is.

All you need to do is write one article about the subject of your website. Include a little link to your website in your authors resource box at the bottom. Then just submit it to a few large well-known article directory sites. Then let the magic begin.

The next thing you know you’ll start seeing your article turning up in many other websites.

I wrote an article back in 2005. I just posted it on five article websites. After just two months The article was appearing on over 25 other sites. That’s five times as many in a very short time.

This happens because other websites are looking for ready written content for their website. When they put it on their site they have to include the link to your website.

This means from just a few article sites your article starts spreading all over the web. And your website starts being seen by thousands of people in no time.

So stop wasting your time with other ways of getting traffic. This for way is the top way. Start writing.
