When you’re effectively implementing a linking strategy for your website, essentially what you’re doing is creating link relationships between your content and your keyword search terms.

An important aspect of a linking strategy is being able to check for back links and to know how well your site is performing in the search indexes.

Below, I’ve outlined how you can effectively search for back links using your article titles and keyword phrases.

Effectively Searching for Backlinks

The only software that I ever recommend using in your link building campaigns is SEO Elite and/or Keyword Elite. While they are a bit pricey, if you’re going to engage in a long-term linking campaign, these tools are priceless. They allow you to search out effective keyword phrases, research competition, and help you define your linking strategies.

However, don’t worry if you don’t have these two pieces of software. I want to first note, that the “link:” command in Google doesn’t work. Google has even said that it doesn’t work correctly. Why? Because they don’t want anyone to crack their search algo. So, you can certainly use the link: command, but it’s not accurate and it changes constantly. You’ll be frustrated if you rely on this only.

The easiest way to check for backlinks is to search on the titles of any articles you’ve submitted. If you’ve submitted your articles to high PageRank sites, your articles should get indexed fairly quickly. Once they’re indexed, you will be able to search on the article title and see where you’ve been picked up. Believe it or not, there are many people who constantly grab new content that shows up in article directories.

Another technique for finding back links is to do a search on your website name. So, you would search “yourdomain” or whatever page you’re linking to in your articles and links submissions.

The last technique you can use to search for back links is a combination of your keyword phrases and domain name. Keep in mind that if you want a keyword phrase to actually show up as the phrase, you’ll have to put quotes (”keyword”) around it. Otherwise, you get too many results and it will confuse or make you think you have more links and you really do.

One thing to keep in mind is that there’s a difference between getting indexed and getting credit for a link in the search engines. You may find that after a few days your articles are starting to get indexed. This is a good thing but it also can be misleading.

It may take up to 30 days for your website to get credit for the link. A lot of people get excited when they see that they’re starting to get some traffic from the articles they placed or links they submitted. Then they panic when the traffic drops off or ebbs from an influx of traffic. At this point, most website owners think these techniques simply don’t work and quit.

However, if you understand that linking is an ongoing process, you’ll understand that that a loss of traffic is part of the process. You’ll understand that it’s the cumulative effect of your efforts that will continue to drive your search results higher, thus increasing your traffic.

While I highly recommend using the “Elite” software products to find backlinks for your website, you can still use the techniques I’ve outlined above to search for your links and to ensure that your linking strategy is working like it should be.

You can start by using search engines and forums. Forums related to making money online, that have sections where to buy, trade or swap links are the ones you should look for. The more popular the forum the better.

Here is what to look for when buying links.

Side wide links are not as much powerful as they seem. A site wide link means you get a link from all the pages, or many pages within the same website. For example ten thousand backlinks from a website which has ten thousand pages.

The thing is that Google does not count a lot of backlinks from the same site. They will not count as ten thousand backlinks for sure. But obviously you still get some value.

More deals you can find include, article submission, directory submission or links from a network of blogs. You cannot buy five different directory submission services, because probably they will submit to the same sites. For directory submissions find out the best deal, take your time on proper research. Usually a deal where you get a thousand directory submissions is good.

Article submission again you need to make sure you are not buying services where you get submissions to the same directories. You need to ask for a list or sample of the directories.

Once again, a deal where they submit to a thousand article directories is great. It is not suggested to keep researching for a better deal, because it will be very hard if you are not very lucky.

Remember buying links can also mean a lot of links fast pointing to your website. It is not bad at all, however you need to make sure you use different anchor texts. Create some variations of your main keyword and use all of them. Some six or eight variations is probably enough.

Variations means simple pick up your keyword like for example blue cars then create new keywords out of it, but always use your main keyword.

We get blue cars for sale, cheap blue cars, low cost blue cars, blue cars cheap and so on. But you want to use your main keyword almost all of the time. Do not take this too seriously, just make sure you change it sometimes.

Another important thing to look for when buying links on a network of blogs is that the blogs are not on the same Ip address. It does not matter if they have no pagerank, but make also sure the blogs are indexed at least. A network of blogs is simple a big list of blogs.

Certain deals consist of purchasing links from high pagerank websites, but these usually are more expensive. You should not take these deals if your budget is limited. Buying a lot of links but from pagerank zero or low pagerank websites is still great. Always make sure the websites are at least indexed.

I mentioned the term deals in this article simple because the most popular services charge a monthly fee for just one link. However if your budget is limited, you need to look for deals, which exist.

With an article directory you are writing articles about the service or product that you website is advertising. The articles that you write need to have keywords spread throughout the article. For example if your website is selling black dress you will want to make sure that the words “black dress” is found several times in the article. To further boost the articles appeal you will also need to have several synonyms of the phrase such as the “dresses that are black.”

In the body of the article you want to place at least one link to your website. Every article directory has its own limits to how many direct links you can have in the body of your article so make sure you read the submission requirements carefully as they will reject your article if you did not follow the criteria. You are also able to add a link to your website in your bio area so take advantage of it.

The goal of article writing is this: you want to write unique and interesting articles and submit them to the directories and then wait for other people in the same business to want to use your articles for content on their website. This is a free way for webmasters to get content for their website however they must leave all of your links intact and working. This is how you begin to get quality backlinks for your site.

Now what happens as your articles are spread around the internet with your links embedded in them the search engines such as Google and Yahoo! send out their spiders and locate the links. The more links that the spiders find the higher your page is ranked and as you know the higher your page is ranked the more people will be able to find you.

Be careful though when you write your articles there are strict guidelines and each article is check for them. First you are never allowed to plagiarize another writer’s work. Secondly, use your keywords wisely adding them too many times in an article is called “keyword stuffing” and will get your article rejected. Make sure that you proofread your articles; most articles are rejected just because of spelling and grammatical errors.

The good news is that if you don’t have the time or you do not feel that you are capable of writing these articles you can find many freelance writers that will do them for you. You can find these writers all over the internet and several websites are dedicated to hooking up freelancers and clients. You will have to pay for their services but remember without quality banklinks the search engines won’t find your website.

Submit articles to the Top Article Directories.This is the grandmaster of traffic generation, the process of which is still very effective, yet very mundane. Fully optimize your resource box with anchor text and link backs.

Provide blog comments on others blogs. Give constructive opinions or quality information to generate backlinks to your own sites. Note that some webmasters will deem you as simply trying to get backlinks if you provide unrelated one liners.

Leverage on affordable offline advertising to drive traffic to your online site. Wear your site if you have to, on your Tees. Or print your URL on your car, external of your house, windows of your high rise apartment, as screen savers, give away URL stickers etc.

Submit articles to blog carnivals. Make sure that you submit only the best from your article collection and do not spam them.

Submit your posts to Social networking sites. This is the age of new media, social networking is a free and effective means of communication. You should leverage on this channel especially when your targeted niche are between 15 35 years old which forms the largest group of social site users. Do active Social Bookmarking. Help them help you make more friends and visitors to your sites by creating bookmarking icons on your blog.

Use offline meet ups to create exposure for yourself and your site. Around the globe and around the year, there are never-ending seminars be it internet or your related niche. Attend them and generate exposure. You may even be able to forge online and offline joint ventures via collaborations.

While some are more powerful than others, always bear in mind that every little tactic you deploy will eventually yield you some traffic, albeit not instantaneously. The key is patience.

Because of this I have outlined some simple suggestions in order to get going with your linking strategy. There are many ways of obtaining backlinks and it is an easy process, however it can be very monotonous and time consuming. Please build your links responsibly and do not spam the following services in order to get more links quickly. The search engines can penalise sites that gain links too quickly as it is deemed that the links are not naturally built.

Firstly do a search on a search engine for site that are similar in content to yours. Go through the tops twenty results and contact as many as you can by email to request exchanging links. Some will oblige, others wont but this is a good place to start and if you only get four links from twenty it hasnt taken you long.

If you are a member of a forum, check their signature rules and if they allow HTML signatures add your link to it. This way every time you make a post a link to your site will be generated. Use Anchor text too if you can for your keyword of choice.

Similarly to the above, if you post comments on blogs then add a link to you site in the post. Make sure you are allowed to do this first by checking with the blog owner. Many blog comment boxes have a section for adding your site so look out for that.

Web 2.0 or social media sites can be a good way to build links. Go to social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Netvous, Delicious and Furl to add you links to news stories or bookmarking features. Make sure you always add your anchor text where possible and always include valuable and decent content when needed.

Creating a Squidoo lens is always a good idea. Create a page with information about your site and link to it.

Submit your website into the correct category of website directories. The main one is DMOZ but there are thousands of others and can be a useful link building technique. Again this is very time consuming but services like LinkBuildingElite can do this for you.

If you have more than one website or a blog of your own, then link your new site from them.

Avoid spamming link software. The best way to get links is to do it manually. Much software available for this purpose is considered a spamming technique and again could get you penalised by the search engines. Build your links slowly but steadily and you will see results over time.

Wordpress is a little more advanced so I recommend if you don’t have alot of experience with Blogs or installing scripts that you go set up a Blogger blog which will only take you less than 5 minutes to do.

Once you’ve set up your Blog the only thing left for you to do is add you articles.

TIP: Make sure you hyperlink your URL and use Anchor Text with your most targeted keywords. By doing this the Search Engine spiders will rank your website higher under that keyword term you specify in your Anchor Text.

After you’ve added your articles all you have to do now is submit your new RSS Feed to RSS Directories and RSS Search Engines.

As well as keywords, meta tags and content, search engines take into consideration the number of links from other sites to your own. These are known in the trade as backlinks.

And as a website owner and Internet Marketer you want your site to have a very high ranking, and so you need as many backlinks as you can get.

The first method is to join a link exchange program. These can allow you to build a huge number of links very rapidly, but the big problem with them is many of the sites tend to be spammy and junk sites desperate to get to the top of the search engines. Some search engines will penalise you for links to these sort of sites, which is something you want to avoid.

You also want to avoid your links being on link farms – if there are too many external links on a single site then you may again get penalised by the search engines. In these link exchanges you will often find these link farms.

You can also search for relevant sites and manually create links to them. Now obviously this is a painstaking approach and will take absolutely forever.

There are some definite advantages to having backlinks and you want as many as possible pointing to your site. Now in order for them to be most effective, you need to know a trick or two.

Usually when you are link exchanging or writing articles you are in control of the text that is displayed with your link. A lot of marketers will just write any old blurb and then list their website.

Yes, you get a back link, but you don’t harness the full power of it. It’s like buying a Ferrari and then driving everywhere at twenty miles per hour.

To truly harness this power and drive your backlinks at full speed you need to use what is called anchor text. This is where you have certain words which are a hyperlink to your website. The words you use are your keywords.

There are several types of link building strategies and all of them should be utilized to optimize your sites for the search engines which in turn will increase our traffic, so build links everyday

1. Relevant/Reciprocal Link Exchange

Reciprocal links are where you exchange links with sites that are relevant to yours. AS far as Google is concerned relevance equals quality as far as a backlink is concerned.

There are some webmasters who exchange links with any and all sites. But if you have a website about weight loss, how helpful is it for your visitors to see a link to a car auction site? This is a weak link and a useless waste of time and looks lame on your website! Build links for your visitors and not for ranks and your site will be rewarded.

The two most important factors in finding reciprocal link exchange partners are relevance and Page Rank, relevance being first important and page rank second. If you can get both then that’s great. If you’re site is new higher rank pages are hard to get, so don’t worry about it and just look for relevance.

Where you place links on your site is important and can be done in several ways. While many still use a links page, this method is not the best option. These days search engines place less value on links pages and when you think about it, how good is a links page for your site and its visitors?

A better option is to place your links and get the reciprocal site to place links as hyperlinks within the content on your site with relevant anchor keywords. This method looks better, provides a natural flow of links and gets more link juice from the search engines and especially Google.

The key to link building on your sites is to make the link look like a side effect and not the end goal.

2. One Way Links

A one-way link is where you get a link to your site from another site without having to place a link back. Of course, one-way links hold the most juice with search engines.

When your site is new it is unlikely that you will get relevant high PR sites to give you a one-way link, unless of course you provide great content or a link bait (explained below).

Natural One-Way Link Building through Content

One of the best ways to get one way links is the natural link method which can be obtained by posting fresh original content on your sites that is so good it makes other websites want to link to it. Good content, which should all ready be a first priority for your visitors and visitor retention, will facilitate natural one-way links.

Link Bait

Another great way to build one way backlinks is to use a link bait on your site. This is the method of choice to get get higher page rank sites to link to lower page rank sites. Link Bait is basically any content or feature within a website that somehow baits viewers to place links to it from other websites. These link baits could be, information hooks, news hooks, humor hooks, tools hooks like a widget or some helpful tool that other sites can use.

Article Marketing and submitting your sites to Internet Directories are very effective ways to get one-way links.

3. 3-Way Links

3-ways: Site A points to Site B and Site B points to Site C and Site C points back to Site A. The point is to try to make reciprocals look like one-ways, this method really doesn’t have much value and I don’t recommend it.

4. Outbound Links

Outbound links are the websites you link to or site as references within content. Whatever your niche there authority and other helpful sites for your visitors and and those are the sites that you want to link to.

Some webmasters are so afraid of losing traffic or giving up their link juice that you hardly ever see outbound links on their sites, this is a big mistake.

Outbound links are a necessary part of establishing your authority within your niche and a vital part of your Internet Marketing efforts. They are a vital part of any website/blog and their existence or non-existence can determine whether high-authority, high page rank sites would ever link to you, mainly because if you are not consistently seeking out new information and intelligence within your niche and citing those sources they will view your website as stale and out of date.

Take a look at the authority sites within your niche, they all have outbound links and references. It is impossible to provide really useful information without offering other sites that can benefit your visitors.

In conclusion, it is crucial for any Internet Marketing Campaign to build links everyday. This is the main way that Google can establish authority, relevance and importance to your websites and is at the center of the Search Engine Optimization strategy.
