I am excellent at what I do. My new boss wants to fire me simply because "he doesn't like me"? I am a software tester. I had an excellent manager and she gave me above average, excellent reviews. (Which I deserved because I trained all new hires and came up with the idea to automate certain aspects of testing and built the system to do it, I created all the tests in use, etc.. I went above and beyond my job description,multi-tasked, quick and good at what I do.
Then they hired this new guy to manage the department. He didn’t like me from the start and went around telling all he doesn’t like me. He told HR "I just don’t like her and want to get rid of her."
My old manage was given a different department but mentored him. She was very hurt by this and asked him why he doesn’t like me. He replied "because I don’t like her."
So, then he hired his old colleague from his previous job to be MY supervisor! I should have had that position and been promoted! The very supervisor he hired even told him that!
His response is always "I don’t like her."
So, this "supervisor" he hired is terrible – has no clue what he does on the job let alone how to manage people! He is horrible at managing people and I am his only report!! He doesn’t give feedback, is mad at me for I don’t know what half the time because he doesn’t communicate what is bothering him/if I am doing something wrong. Doesn’t communicate tasks, or anything! I go in, he ignores me all day!
I trained the supervisor and this new guy that was hired for a while. The supervisor would never say thank you or anything to me – but if I did mess up just a little he would tell the new guy sarcastically "Oh- something she doesn’t know" because I do know a lot. The more I TEACH HIM the more he treats me like dirt.
Anyway, this supervisor lets so many issues into production and his flaws go unnoticed If I make one iota if a mistake, it seems they all want me fired or want to use it against me!
Ok, so, now it is to the point I think they will fire me or get rid of me. I am so stressed out all the time wondering if I will have a job or not. I am very good at what I do. Is there anything at all I can do to save my job? I am looking and applying to other jobs.
I just wonder if what I am going through is even legal? I heard if you go to HR you are toast – so I am afraid to even go to HR.
Why would they even keep a guy around / or let the guy continue saying he doesn’t like me? That is in my opinion so unprofessional that he wants to get rid of an employee simply because he doesn’t like her? … and right after he started the job! He doesn’t even know my qualifications or what I have done for the department/company!
(You should see his linked in profile. Makes me want to gag – he lists that everything I did before he even started- built the system to automate and test – he says HE did all this! ewe!)
Anyway, besides I am looking for a new job, may take a little time.
Am I handling it right by just staying quiet, being polite and doing my job or is this hurting me more?

Just follow what you seem feels right. If you don’t mind staying, then stay. If you can’t take your boss because of his unjust ways, then just find another job and start fresh.
And this is an unethical practice, so you can report it to the correct authorities. But usually that doesn’t lead to great results as many people do not like whistleblowers.
It’s all entirely up to you. You’re the one that has to make the choice. References :

He is your boss – - he does not like you
I gathered from what you have said that you are overbearing because you know the
system well and have let Boss Hogg know this
It’s not good to butt heads with Boss – it only brings the mess you are describing – keep sending those resumes. References :
